Transport for Londinium has announced that they are ‘aggressively expanding the number of available Crossrail stations in the coming days’, according to a memo sent to the Londinium Times this morning.
The memo details a significant expansion of Crossrail as well as an intriguing new concept for the line: one-way shuttles. The idea is to eliminate two-way rail connections in favour of a point-to-point system, where a station connects to two other stations in two different directions. For instance, Bond St. allows you to ‘hop’ to Heathrow Station, which allows you to ‘hop’ to Regent St. The planned route is as follows: Bond Street. to Heathrow to Regent St. to New Cavendish Street to Bond Street. This system will no doubt be controversial, as it will turn Crossrail into a uni-directional closed loop. However, this will mark the first time a Londinium Underground station connects to more than one station on the same platform.
The entire plan hinges on Heathrow Airport’s opening, which is currently delayed due to the AirCS race. Still, it’s an interesting idea and certainly a unique one, though some wonder if the line is now a misnomer.
