Northern Line Reopens Following Significant Delays

When the Jubilee line was closed as a result of the bombing of Luton Airport in April, a large influx of traffic converged on the aging Northern line. The line was quickly overwhelmed and closed due to concerns that the surge would cause permanent, difficult to fix damage that would take the line out of action for longer than the Jubilee line would be shut for. When the Jubilee line reopened on the 25th, the Northern line remained closed. Transport for Londinium cited wanting to take the opportunity to make improvements, and yet the line remained dormant for months.

Earlier today, however, the Northern line was finally reopened to public service. The line features level boarding, a single track on the platform to avoid confusion, and the rail tunnel itself is now lit with soul torches for the entire length. Due to the aging track, which was not renewed, the line’s speed remains capped at 8 blk/s and will likely never be uncapped, according to experts.

Due to the imminent expansion of the District line to New Cavendish Street, the Northern line will be made redundant as the far more modern District line will offer higher capacity, faster speeds, and better access to the rest of the network. This means that the Northern line’s days are very much numbered, though TfL are reportedly considering converting it to a heritage railway and removing it from the Tube Map.
