O3 Pulls Down Cell Tower at Luton Airport

O3, the national carrier, has decomissioned an E cell phone tower on the premises of the now abandoned Luton Airport. This means that the area around the airport no longer receives an E signal, and the airport now has no signal at all. This has sparked concerns about emergency landings on the airport; if there is no cell service, then there is no way to alert the relevent authorities about the landing.

An O3 spokesperson had the following to say:

“We removed the tower because we received complaints from the nearby IMAX that their phone was connecting to the E tower and thus giving them unusably slow service. Furthermore, the cost of maintaining the tower compared to the potential revenue (so zero, given the airport is closed) simply makes no sense. We apologise to the zero people affected by this change.”
