Mailboxes across the city have silently been changed from red shulker boxes to barrels. This has been generally well-received, albeit with some confusion as the change came out of nowhere. A spokesperson for the government had this to say:
“We made this change in anticipation of the upcoming Building Numbers Act. The Act requires all mailboxes to consist of a barrel atop a fence, hence the Council changed all the mailboxes ahead of time. It’s little more than that, really.”
When we mentioned that our mailbox remains a shulker box, the spokesperson joked that the government would have to add an exception to the law just for us. When we asked if the spokesperson was being serious, they declined to comment.
Digitisation note: Section 3.4 of the Building Numbers Act 2025 gives the Londinium Times an exception to the rule of mailbox design, and the mailbox remains like this to this day. As such, it is clear the spokesperson was not joking, at least not entirely.
