Yesterday, a crane was constructed between Luton Airport and the local IMAX, leading to a flurry of debate as to its nature. Two factions emerged; one argued Luton Airport Memorial was about to be destroyed, and the other argued the same for the IMAX. Naturally, the former group had a more conspiratorial mindset, alluding to the possibility that a cover-up of the memory of the Luton disaster was happening in real time.
The crane is visible in the distance from Oxford Circus, and is barely visible popping up above Luton. Regarding this matter, we contacted both the Government (who own Luton Airport Memorial) and IMAX (who own…yeah, IMAX). The Government spokesperson declined to comment, but noted that the crane had been approved for use the a prior to the installation.
The IMAX spokesperson told a different story:
“IMAX as a business has, to put it charitably, not done well over the months since our launch. The fact the theatre is completely empty is probably a contributing factor. We are entering what you might call a quiet period, and, as such, we will be demolishing the IMAX in Londinium and selling the plot of land back to the Government. We are also working with them to ensure Luton remains unharmed. As for why it’s pointed ‘at’ Luton, the crane is heavy, and the IMAX is large, and as such, a large amount of swing force is required to sufficiently demolish the building. We have gone with the maximum clearance the area allows us, that being 180°.”
Interestingly, the IMAX spokesperson mentioned that they had no plans of decommissioning the crane, meaning it may indeed be here to stay. At least it’s a pretty crane.
